Government seeks additional funding for Damongo University – Minister

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has urged for greater financial backing and collaborative efforts to ensure the successful completion of the University of Science and Technology in Damango, located in Ghana's Savannah Region. The project's total cost is projected to exceed $100 million, encompassing necessary infrastructure, equipment, and facilities.

This call for increased funding came during a meeting between Iddrisu and Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Cong Song, who discussed the project's development and future prospects.

A significant funding boost was provided last year when the Chinese government pledged $30 million to help initiate construction. However, Iddrisu emphasized that this amount would fall short of fully funding and equipping the institution. The proposed university aims to become a leading center of excellence in Science, Technology, Robotics, Digital Sciences, and Artificial Intelligence, among other emerging disciplines crucial for Ghana's future development.

Iddrisu explained that the university's focus on science, technology, and emerging fields would equip young Ghanaians with the skills necessary to compete effectively in a rapidly evolving global economy. The government is also implementing a broader strategy to establish universities in regions lacking such institutions, aiming to expand access to quality tertiary education, promote balanced national development, and reduce educational disparities across the country.

The Chinese Ambassador praised the Minister for his leadership and commitment to transforming Ghana's education sector, reaffirming China's dedication to enhancing cooperation in education and other areas of mutual interest. The planned university is anticipated to contribute to the expansion of tertiary education in the Savannah Region, offering specialized training in science, technology, and other emerging fields.
