Clooney honoured as Hollywood-light Venice Film Festival kicks off

George Clooney received a lifetime achievement award at the opening of the 83rd Venice Film Festival, a prestigious event that began on Wednesday. The 65-year-old actor, known for his political activism, criticized US President Donald Trump during the ceremony. Laura Dern, a close friend and actress, honored Clooney by presenting him with the award, acknowledging his long and successful career.

Clooney, accompanied by his wife Amal, received warm applause from the audience. Earlier, at a press conference, Clooney called the United States a "kakistocracy," a term for a country governed by the least qualified individuals. The festival also addressed the lack of women representation in the film industry, with director Alberto Barbera selecting only two women-directed films out of 21 in the main competition.

Actor and director Maggie Gyllenhaal questioned this decision, highlighting the challenges women face in securing film financing and the preference for different themes. Despite Hollywood's absence, the Venice Film Festival showcased a diverse array of subjects, including Elon Musk, Rupert Murdoch, and the Gallagher brothers. The event also featured a strong lineup of independent films, such as Danny Boyle's "Ink" and Martin McDonagh's "Wild Horse Nine."

Other notable films include Florian Zeller's psychological thriller "Bunker" and Ilya Khrzhanovsky's experimental film "DAU." The festival will run until September 12, with many high-profile films vying for the prestigious Golden Lion award.
