CJ’s tour of parastatals: It’s shocking, unprecedented – Kojo Oppong Nkrumah

Former Information Minister and Member of Parliament Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has expressed shock and unease over Chief Justice Nuu’s tour of Ghana’s parastatals and state-owned enterprises. Describing it as “unprecedented,” Mr. Oppong Nkrumah made these remarks in an interview on Asempa FM on September 2, 2026, following the Chief Justice’s recent visits to entities such as the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF) and the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT).

He stated that this has never occurred during his long tenure observing Ghanaian politics and governance. Mr. Oppong Nkrumah questioned the rationale behind these visits, emphasizing that the judiciary is an independent branch of government that must maintain a clear separation from the executive and legislative branches. He expressed concern over comments attributed to the Chief Justice regarding the performance of state-owned enterprises, particularly concerning SSNIT’s plans to dispose of some assets, including the Labadi Beach Hotel.

Mr. Oppong Nkrumah questioned what had been done over the past eight years for state-owned enterprises to be subject to such scrutiny now. He expressed a desire to review the full video of the Chief Justice’s interactions to grasp the full context before forming a final opinion. Additionally, Mr. Oppong Nkrumah noted that the Chief Justice had recently faced criticism for being seen as too close to officials of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), making the reported tours even more concerning.

He reiterated that the judiciary must uphold its independence and refrain from actions that might imply close ties to the executive branch.
