C.J. Stroud’s contract negotiations with Houston Texans could be a win-win

In a potential win-win scenario, the Houston Texans and their quarterback C.J. Stroud find themselves at an impasse in contract negotiations. Stroud, entering his fourth NFL season, was offered a fifth-year option last year, which came with a $26 million payout for 2027. However, he declined a subsequent contract proposal from the Texans that would have placed him among the 12 quarterbacks earning $50 million annually.

Despite this turn down, the Texans' general manager, Nick Caserio, has set a Week 1 deadline for an extension ahead of the 2025 season.

Stroud's decision to play out the remainder of the season without a new contract could be viewed as a calculated risk. Reflecting on his past performance, Stroud's interception-heavy 2024 season, where he threw four picks in a Divisional Round loss to the New England Patriots, could have derailed the Texans' hopes for a Super Bowl appearance.

However, the quarterback's contributions during his tenure include three consecutive playoff appearances. His best statistical season was in 2023, with 4,108 yards, 23 touchdowns, and a QBR of 61.7 – the best of his career.

Entering 2025, Stroud's numbers showed a slight improvement, with an Adjusted Net Yards per Attempt of 6.4, a 6-point increase from 2024, and a QBR of 61.7, which ranked 12th in the NFL. Coupled with the Texans' defense, which boasts new signings Kayden McDonald, Jadeveon Clowney, Logan Hall, and Reed Blankenship, Stroud's performance could lead to an even better contract offer by the season's end. These factors suggest that a successful 2025 season could see Stroud's contract value increase significantly.

From the Texans' perspective, if Stroud delivers a championship-worthy performance, the price tag would be justified. Conversely, if Stroud fails to meet these expectations, the franchise would have avoided a contract snag that has plagued some other NFL teams, including the Miami Dolphins.
