C.J. Stroud, Houston Texans contract negotiations could be a win-win

Houston Texans and their quarterback C.J. Stroud are reportedly in the midst of contract negotiations that could prove to be a mutually beneficial outcome. Stroud, who is entering his fourth NFL season, turned down a lucrative contract offer from the Texans, which would have placed him among the top 12 quarterbacks earning $50 million per year. Despite this, Stroud seems content to let the season run its course, even without a contract extension.

Stroud’s decision may seem risky, but it is a calculated one. He did not have a strong season in 2024, thrown four interceptions in a loss to the New England Patriots during the Divisional Round, and this loss may have cost the team a Super Bowl appearance. However, Stroud has rebounded in 2025, posting an impressive Adjusted Net Yards per Attempt of 6.4 and a QBR of 61.7, which ranked 12th in the NFL.

Additionally, the Texans have bolstered their defense with the signings of Kayden McDonald, Jadeveon Clowney, Logan Hall, and Reed Blankenship, a unit that was one of the league's best last season. This strong defense is expected to continue its impressive performance, potentially leading to an even deeper playoff run for the Texans. Consequently, Stroud could receive a more substantial contract offer closer to the season's end.

From Stroud's perspective, this risk could pay off, as he bets on himself and potentially lands a contract worth more than initially anticipated. If Stroud's play earns him a Lombardi Trophy or similar success, the price of the extension will be well worth it. However, if Stroud fails to deliver, the Texans would have avoided a contract extension confrontation that has plagued other teams in the league.
