Browns assistant GM describes new addition as a 'fit' for defense

Following a tumultuous offseason, the Cleveland Browns and general manager Andrew Berry have finalized a 53-man roster ahead of the 2026-27 NFL regular season. During this process, the team trimmed down the preseason roster, resulting in notable players like hometown hero Luke Floriea not making it. However, the Browns prioritized adding defensive players to bolster the squad's depth ahead of the upcoming season.

Catherine Hickman, the Browns' assistant general manager and vice president of football operations, discussed the search for players on waivers, stating that the team sought individuals who could enhance the defense's flexibility. She elaborated, "I’d view them as opportunities to get the roster better, and I think that’s what we try to do at cutdown."

The front office explored various avenues for player acquisition, such as claiming players like Mekhi Blackmon or signing others like former first-round draft pick Noah Igbinoghene. This move provided the defense with both flexibility and veteran presence, offering the coaching staff additional options. Among the signings, Igbinoghene, a 26-year-old former first-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins, stands out.

Over six NFL seasons, he amassed 119 tackles, 17 pass deflections, and one interception in 69 games for the Miami Dolphins, Dallas Cowboys, and Washington Commanders, making him a valuable young depth piece for the Browns' secondary unit.
