BREAKING: Court orders IGP, AGF to grant Adeniyi Adeyemi access to lawyers

The Federal High Court in Abuja has mandated the Attorney-General of the Federation, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Nigeria Police Force to allow Adeniyi Adeyemi unobstructed access to any legal counsel he desires. Adeyemi is connected to the purported fake Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council, PFIPC. Justice Obiora Egwuatu handed down the ruling on Thursday while considering an ex parte application in a fundamental rights case filed by Adeyemi through his attorney, M.B.

Abdulazeez. The court decided that Adeyemi should be allowed to meet with his preferred legal practitioners at any reasonable time while still in custody. Apart from this, Adeyemi also requested bail, release from detention, and access to medical treatment from health professionals of his choice. His legal team further requested the court to prevent the respondents, along with their officers and agents, from questioning him or forcing him to make, support, or sign any statement without a lawyer present.

However, Justice Egwuatu did not grant the other reliefs at the ex parte stage, stating that the respondents should be given the opportunity to respond. The judge subsequently gave the AGF and the police 72 hours to explain why the remaining reliefs sought by Adeyemi should not be granted. The matter was postponed until September 9 for the respondents to present their arguments.

Earlier, Adeyemi was labeled a fugitive in connection with allegations surrounding the supposed PFIPC scandal.
