BPP unveils reform to digitalise, modernise public procurement

The Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) has unveiled a comprehensive procurement reform programme focused on digitalisation, professionalisation, compliance, and the strategic use of government funds while seeking stronger partnerships with media and digital content creators to enhance transparency in public spending. At a conference in Abuja, BPP Director-General Dr. Adebowale Adedokun emphasized the critical role of public procurement in driving Nigeria's economic and infrastructural development, describing it as an economic driver and catalyst for national transformation.

Adedokun announced the implementation of an electronic government procurement system aimed at automating key procurement stages, reducing manual intervention, strengthening audit trails, and facilitating real-time monitoring. He stressed that the transformation extends beyond mere digitisation, encompassing a broader transformation of procurement processes.

The reform initiative also calls for the professionalisation of procurement management, stronger compliance and oversight mechanisms, and greater access to public procurement opportunities for various underrepresented groups. Meanwhile, the Bloggers and Content Creators Association of Nigeria (BAVCCA) has announced plans to submit petitions and evidence of alleged corruption in the public procurement system to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), criticizing a lack of transparency and calling for stronger engagement between the BPP, media, civil society, and digital content creators to promote accountability in government reforms.
