Argentine analysts rule out a real shift by Washington on the Falklands

Argentine analysts are asserting that there is no substantial change in the US stance regarding the Falkland Islands, despite Donald Trump's recent remarks. Trump stated that he regularly reviews all positions, but emphasized that this is just one of many. Argentine President Javier Milei called the comments "very significant" and announced a nationwide address on Thursday.

Political scientist Claudio Fantini suggests these remarks should be viewed as a warning rather than an announcement, arguing that the motive is Britain's refusal to authorize the use of its bases for operations against Iran, with an added ideological element given the shared Labour government.

Gabriel Puricelli of the Public Policy Laboratory describes the Falkland Islands as "the handiest pretext" for forcing the UK to increase military spending to 3% of its gross domestic product. Argentine political scientist Andrés Malamud forecasts that the situation will remain unchanged, much like with Greenland. Former ambassador Diego Guelar points out that a strategic change would require consulting the US Congress, which Trump's opinion alone cannot achieve.

Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno maintains a cautious approach, stating that they should not operate on what they cannot control and should focus on doing their homework to ensure their claim is heard. Presidential adviser Santiago Caputo, however, posted on social media that "England is the past, Argentina is the future" and that it would be odd if the United States did not review its stance.

Diplomats cited by Infobae noted that a favorable US vote at the United Nations would be "more symbolic than political" and that "in practical terms, it changes nothing." The British government has consistently reiterated that its position towards the Falkland Islands and its commitment to the islanders remains "unwavering."
