Apple (AAPL) Faces Mixed Outlook Ahead of Foldable iPhone Launch

Apple's upcoming fall launch event may unveil a foldable iPhone, dubbed the iPhone Ultra, according to mounting reports. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts the device will be introduced alongside the iPhone 18 lineup, although it may only reach consumers later in the year. The event, scheduled for September 9, will also mark a significant transition as outgoing CEO Tim Cook hands over the reins to new head John Ternus.

An iPhone Ultra is expected to have a 7.8-inch display, but may not offer all the functionality of an iPad. Despite leaks suggesting a book-style design similar to the Pixel Fold, the screen is rumored to have little or no crease, marking a significant improvement over early foldable phones. Apple's hinges may be made of liquid metal, sourced from Liquidmetal Technologies, but no official confirmation has been made.

Despite the hype, a recent survey found that 64% of people are not interested in foldable phones. If launched, Apple's foldable iPhone could have a starting price of over $2,000 and may face a supply shortage, with production taking up to five months to ramp up.
