AFA orders tribute to Messi, with applause in the 10th minute of matches

Footballers and fans throughout Argentina will pause matches at all levels of play on the weekend to honor Lionel Messi, who announced his retirement from the national team on Monday. This gesture, arranged by the Argentine Football Association (AFA), will occur in the 10th minute of each game, as a mark of respect for the legendary captain who has reached the age of 39.

The tribute extends to both men's and women's matches, encompassing 11-a-side football, futsal, and beach football. The one-minute pause serves as recognition of Messi's illustrious career with the Argentina National Team, which included winning the World Cup, two Copa América titles, and the Finalissima in 2022. Stadiums equipped with large screens will broadcast a video produced by the AFA in Messi's honor before the games commence.

This tribute comes two days after Messi concluded 21 years of service to his country, during which he amassed 207 caps and 125 goals for the three-time world champions. Messi expressed his gratitude in an emotional Instagram post, stating, "I emptied myself; I have nothing left to give, and besides, there are great young players coming through behind who deserve to be here."

The skipper's retirement follows Argentina's loss in the 2026 World Cup final to Spain by a single goal on July 19 in East Rutherford, New Jersey. In addition to the in-match tribute, a bill declaring Messi an illustrious and roving ambassador of the Argentine Republic has been introduced to Congress in recognition of his career and international profile.
