“We’ll See if That’s the Same”: Kara Lawson in “Fact-Finding” Mode With Caitlin Clark as She Ponders How FIBA Defense Will Impact Fever Star

Team USA coach Kara Lawson expressed enthusiasm about Caitlin Clark's potential impact on the FIBA World Cup. She acknowledged Clark's ability to stretch the floor, create pace, and score as key factors that could benefit the team. However, Lawson stated that she is currently in "fact-finding" mode regarding how Clark would be defended in FIBA competition compared to the WNBA.

Clark's unique skill set, including her ability to draw attention and create spacing, will be tested as she competes in her first FIBA World Cup. Lawson noted that they will need to see how opponents adapt to Clark's style of play, as the defensive tactics may differ from those employed in the WNBA. Clark had an impressive performance at the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers in March, where she was named the tournament MVP.

She averaged 11.6 points, 6.4 assists, and shot 52.9% from the field, including 40.0% from three-point range.

Although the competition was not as strong as it would be during the actual World Cup, Clark will face more experienced opponents like Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier in the tournament. Clark, who returned from a long injury absence, is more prepared for this year's competition, mentally stronger after overcoming injuries and back issues.

Her recent performances have demonstrated the positive impact of overcoming mental obstacles, as she averaged 24.4 points, 9.4 assists, and 1.1 steals per game in August, while shooting 47.5% from the field and 40.8% from three-point range in 11 games.
