Wawrinka feels the love on Grand Slam goodbye

Stan Wawrinka, the three-time major champion, felt the love from the crowd at the US Open during his final Grand Slam match. The 41-year-old Swiss tennis player, who retired at the end of the season, was given an emotional send-off after losing to Italy’s Matteo Berrettini in straight sets. Originally overlooked for a wildcard, Wawrinka was given a last-minute reprieve due to the large turnout of thousands of fans at the 8,000-capacity Grandstand court.

Wawrinka was given the news about the wildcard on Wednesday, just days before his final match. Despite the late notice, he quickly arranged a return to New York to play at the Grand Slam he had won a decade ago. With the crowd arriving early and facing long queues, it was indeed a farewell they would all remember. Berrettini, the veteran opponent, fought hard to run away with the third set, eventually securing the victory.

Wawrinka's competitive spirit and one-handed backhand were celebrated throughout the event, and he received a photo montage of his US Open triumph from the chief executive Craig Tiley.
