US, Iran exchange attacks as lull in war appears over

The United States and Iran resumed military hostilities on Wednesday, following a significant exchange of attacks. Washington threatened further devastating strikes, while Iran protested an attack that reportedly killed five civilians at a wedding. The US Central Command confirmed that it conducted a series of strikes against targets belonging to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Tuesday.

These strikes targeted air defense sites, radar systems, maritime assets, mine-laying capabilities, and communications sites. Iran retaliated by striking US assets in Jordan and Iraq, as well as Bahrain, according to official statements and Iranian media reports. Jordan's forces reported that 13 ballistic missiles entered the kingdom's airspace, with 10 intercepted and three falling in remote areas.

Bahrain reported that Iranian drones were intercepted and destroyed. The IRGC also claimed that its ground forces carried out combined missile and drone attacks on US bases in Erbil, Iraq, resulting in the death of several US personnel. However, Iraq and the US have not officially confirmed the attack. This renewed conflict marked the first serious combat since July, following a period of a fragile ceasefire as both sides showed little interest in returning to negotiations.

The ongoing war has taken a toll on Iran's ailing economy and degraded its conventional military forces. Meanwhile, the US, facing higher fuel prices and depleted stockpiles of long-range missiles ahead of the November congressional elections, has expressed concerns about its military readiness. As hostilities resumed, both sides issued defiant statements.

President Trump expressed satisfaction with the US position, citing control over the Strait of Hormuz and Iran's economic collapse. Iran, in turn, warned that continued American aggression would face harsher responses and that any country cooperating with the US military would face dangerous consequences. The incident at a wedding near Sirik, which left five people dead and 50 wounded, including a four-year-old child, has been cited as one of the most significant cases of civilian casualties in the war.

Iran's foreign ministry vowed to respond to such acts with firmness, urging governments and international institutions to speak out against barbarism.
