US and Colombia Cement Aggressive Military Alliance Targeting Pacific Drug Routes and Border Cartels

The United States and Colombia have formalized a strategic military alliance, focusing intensively on the Pacific drug routes and the Ecuadorian border. General Francis L. Donovan, head of the U.S. Southern Command, recently arrived in Colombia, reinforcing the joint tactical agenda aimed at dismantling transnational narcotics networks.

The strategy involves targeting semisubmersibles, rehabilitating grounded aircraft, and expanding multinational base operations. One of the key priorities is securing the volatile Pacific coast, particularly the port city of Tumaco, which is a significant exit point for drug trafficking. U.S. and Colombian forces plan to collaborate on anti-semisubmersible technology to improve maritime surveillance and intelligence sharing.

The partnership extends into Ecuador, where the allied nations agreed to strengthen their military presence and intelligence sharing along the border, a key cocaine corridor. Discussions are also underway to consider establishing a binational military base between Colombia and Ecuador, reflecting the deepened cooperation between the two nations.

Donovan's visit included meetings with Colombian Defense Minister Jorge Eduardo Mora and Ecuadorian Defense Minister Gian Carlo Loffredo, as well as a tour to assess and address deficiencies in Colombia's operational readiness, including the rehabilitation of its aerial fleet. The collaboration has already resulted in tangible outcomes, such as the interception of 4.5 tons of cocaine, the seizure of five vessels, and the arrest of eight individuals in a recent joint operation led by the Colombian Air Force.
