US aircraft carrier to dock near Thai beach resort Pattaya after record 250 days at sea

After an extraordinary 250-day voyage without docking, the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln is set to arrive in Thailand, with its crew of nearly 5,000 experiencing a long-awaited respite. The vessel will call at the popular beach resort of Pattaya, a city renowned for its vibrant nightlife and sex tourism. For the US military personnel, this visit carries historical significance, as the sailors will walk the same streets once traversed by thousands of US troops during the Vietnam War.

These soldiers transformed Pattaya from a quiet fishing village into a bustling party destination. Today, the colorful streets and neon-lit alleys may appear less lively, with bars showcasing videos of pole-dancing women to entice customers. However, the influx of American sailors could provide a much-needed boost to the city's economy, as the Iran War has adversely impacted tourism and consumer spending.

The carrier departed San Diego in November 2020 on a six-month mission in the Pacific and South China Sea, but was rerouted to the Gulf of Oman following the US and Israel's military actions against Iran in February. Concerns have been raised about the crew's living conditions, with some members of Congress pointing to food shortages, malfunctioning toilets and mental stress.

Despite the Navy's assurance that the crew's welfare is well-managed, the exact details of the carrier's docking in Pattaya remain confidential. The Thai authorities have imposed restrictions on certain establishments, such as Soi 6, a street notorious for its go-go bars, and other recreational activities like paragliding and jet-skiing.

The city's mayor, Poramase Ngampiches, recognizes Pattaya's reputation and aims to showcase the city's transformation into a more diverse tourist destination with activities such as sports, seminars, and wellness programs. By September 6, the USS Abraham Lincoln is expected to depart Pattaya with a rejuvenated crew, having forged a new chapter in their relationship with the city and the United States.
