US aircraft carrier docks near Thai beach resort Pattaya after record 250 days at sea

After an unprecedented 250-day stint at sea without docking, the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln has anchored in Thailand, granting its 4,900 crew members a much-needed respite. The vessel is anchored near Thailand's lively beach resort of Pattaya, famous for its vibrant nightlife and seedy tourist industry.

For the US, this visit carries historical significance. American servicemen who stepped into Pattaya's bars and restaurants during the Vietnam War era laid the groundwork for the city's transformation from a tranquil fishing village to a notorious party hub. Today, the neon-lit streets of Pattaya's main drag, Walking Street, are less bustling than usual, with many bars focused on Middle Eastern tourists seeking Turkish ice cream instead of the traditional go-go bars.

The Iran War has negatively impacted tourism and consumer expenditure, leaving businesses in dire need of a boost. When the USS Abraham Lincoln departed San Diego in November 2022, it was initially scheduled for a six-month stint in the Pacific and South China Sea. However, the ship was rerouted to the Gulf after the US and Israel launched military operations against Iran in February.

Some US lawmakers have expressed concerns over reports of food shortages, malfunctioning toilets, and crew member stress. The US Navy acknowledged that working conditions have been challenging but maintained that the crew has received adequate support. The Navy has yet to comment on the carrier's docking at Pattaya, citing operational security.

Thailand, despite its close ties with China, is a US treaty ally, and US naval vessels docking in Thai ports are commonplace. However, this particular visit may mark the largest number of US military personnel disembarking from a war zone to Pattaya since the fall of Saigon in 1975. Local business owners are hopeful that the influx of American troops will lead to increased spending, despite the city's notorious reputation for seedy bars.

Thai authorities have warned US servicemen to avoid certain areas, including Soi 6, known for its racy bars, and certain activities such as prostitution, cannabis consumption, and water sports. The US military has pledged to adhere to Thai laws and US regulations while ensuring the crew members receive ample rest. Two hotels have been earmarked for those who wish to venture off-duty in Pattaya.

US and Thai officials remain optimistic that this visit, following decades of US presence in the region, will help reshape Pattaya's image and provide a welcome break for the weary sailors.
