Umno negeri diberi ruang, bukan autonomi penuh, kata penganalisis

On Friday, Umno agreed with regional party leaders to discuss and negotiate with other political parties for cooperation ahead of the upcoming elections, according to the PKM meeting. Syaza Shukri, an analyst, clarified that the central leadership is not expected to have absolute authority in determining whether any form of cooperation at the state level can proceed. While central leadership may refrain from intervening in early discussions, it will ultimately grant approval on whether to agree or not, she added to FMT.

The National Unity Council (MKT) of Umno approved regional party leaders to engage in talks and negotiations with political parties willing to collaborate for the upcoming elections. However, Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, Umno's Chief Secretary, emphasized that any cooperation must be based on sincerity and trust rather than vote-buying or provocation.

This decision comes as the upcoming PRN Melaka election may see the Barisan Nasional (BN) competing alone or cooperating with Pakatan Harapan (PH) or Perikatan Nasional (PN). At the federal level, BN has already cooperated with PH, while a partnership with PN has been forming since the PRN Negeri Sembilan on August 1st.

Analyst Syaza suggested that granting autonomy was a sign that central leadership is providing more leeway to the states, aligned with the changing political landscape that requires different approaches depending on the local situation. Umno is increasingly acknowledging that a one-size-fits-all approach is no longer suitable due to varying party strength and voter sentiments across states, as seen in the PRN Johor.

The PKM also noted that Umno may not intervene in early discussions. However, Syaza believes central leadership will still give the go-ahead for cooperation or not, depending on the specific political situation of each state.
