When considering the decision between the 2026 Hyundai Tucson Plug-in Hybrid and the 2026 Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid, Edmunds' auto experts have tested both models and found the RAV4 to be the superior choice in several aspects. Both SUVs are hybrid vehicles that can drive a short distance using all-electric power before switching to gasoline, which can significantly reduce gasoline usage for everyday driving when charged at home.

The primary difference between the two lies in their range and fuel economy. The RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid has a longer electric-only range, with the GR Sport trim going up to 48 miles, while the main RAV4 trim reaches 54 miles. In real-world testing, the RAV4 GR Sport even exceeded this estimate, covering 58 miles on all-electric power.

After the battery runs out, the RAV4's EPA-estimated fuel economy is 40 mpg combined city/highway driving. The Tucson Plug-in Hybrid, on the other hand, offers a slightly shorter electric-only range of 32 miles and a combined fuel economy of 35 mpg after that.

In terms of passenger comfort and cargo space, the Tucson Plug-in Hybrid starts with a slight advantage over the RAV4, providing more cargo space behind the rear seats - 33.6 cubic feet versus 31.9 cubic feet. However, in practical testing, Edmunds found that both SUVs offer spacious and practical cargo areas that make loading luggage and gear a breeze.

Therefore, while the Hyundai Tucson Plug-in Hybrid has a marginal advantage in cargo space, the Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid emerges as the clear winner in terms of range, fuel economy, and overall performance.
