Tasmac cracks down on overcharging, suspends 67 employees

The Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (Tasmac) has taken disciplinary action against 67 employees for overcharging customers on liquor at their outlets, according to a recent report. The crackdown targeted employees across major regions, including Chennai, Madurai, Tiruchi, Salem, and Coimbatore. The action stems from a growing number of customer complaints about being charged more than the printed Maximum Retail Price (MRP) at State-run liquor shops.

The Corporation has issued a stern warning that even a single instance of overcharging would lead to the suspension of the entire shop and all its workers. Tasmac has been conducting inspections based on feedback and consumer complaints, and the practice of overcharging will continue to be addressed in the coming days. The issue is exacerbated by employees allegedly collecting extra money to meet shop expenses.

In response, the government has increased employees' salaries and accepted their key demands, making the continued overcharging of MRP unacceptable. As of July 2026, Tasmac operates 4,048 retail vending shops and employs a workforce of 22,877 people, including 6,473 supervisors, 14,379 salespersons, and 2,025 assistant salespersons. The Corporation's revenues for the year 2025-2026 reached a record-high of ₹50,845 crore.
