Maharashtra, Australia Plan Biomanufacturing Task Force To Boost Research, Investment And Trade Cooperation

Maharashtra and Australia are set to enhance their collaboration in the biotechnology sector, with Maharashtra's government proposing a dedicated task force to facilitate joint projects and economic growth, Marketing and Protocol Minister Jaykumar Rawal announced on Wednesday. The focus lies on the biomanufacturing industry, as Rawal directed officials to draft a proposal for the 'Maharashtra-Australia Biomanufacturing Task Force.'

This initiative aims to identify collaboration opportunities, streamline regulatory processes, and spur investments between the two regions.

The meeting, chaired by Rawal, brought together a delegation of Australian biomanufacturing companies to discuss investment prospects, technology transfer, and research cooperation within Maharashtra's burgeoning biomanufacturing sector. Maharashtra, under Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, is positioning itself as an industrial and economic powerhouse, committed to sustainable growth through biotechnology, innovation, and bio-based solutions in various industries like agriculture, food processing, textiles, and energy.

Rawal highlighted Australia's world-class scientific and technological capabilities, financial resources, and research expertise, while emphasizing Maharashtra's vast market, skilled workforce, robust infrastructure, and manufacturing prowess. By merging these strengths, both regions can forge mutually advantageous value chains and unlock new avenues for economic cooperation.

Potential areas for collaboration include biological dyes derived from precision fermentation, alternative proteins, algae-based products, and hydrogen production from agricultural waste.

The proposed task force will play a pivotal role in selecting joint projects, harmonizing regulatory procedures, and promoting investments in both directions. The meeting also stressed strengthening cooperation between regulatory and research institutions in both countries, particularly in food and biotechnology sectors. Rawal emphasized that the goal extends beyond luring Australian investment into Maharashtra, aiming to establish a broader, two-way partnership encompassing technology, trade, research, and investment.
