‘Sulong’ selamat dipindah ke Taman Negara Terengganu

A male orphaned elephant named Sulong Chalil has been relocated to Taman Negara Terengganu via the Kenyir Lake access point, according to the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan). The relocation aims to provide a safer environment and reduce human-elephant conflict risks. Perhilitan emphasized the well-being of Sulong and public safety as top priorities, with every action conducted after on-ground assessment to minimize risks to all parties involved.

The elephant conservation agency reported their appreciation to all involved agencies and the public for their support in a statement. Since August 17, Perhilitan has been closely monitoring Sulong's movement, physical condition, and recorded left leg injury. As a mature male elephant, natural solo behavior was noted rather than separation from a group or search for family members.

Following a risk assessment, Sulong's capture operation was successfully completed on August 30 at the East-West Coastal Highway (JRTB) Gerik area. Subsequently, on September 1, 2026, the transfer process was carried out by Perhilitan with support from the police and two male orphaned elephants, Rambai and Cheri.

Throughout the operation, Sulong received continuous monitoring and veterinary care. The left leg injury showed positive progress, and ongoing treatment will follow veterinary assessment. Previously, videos circulated on social media showing the elephant walking along JRTB, possibly recorded by civilians using the same route.

The involved elephant is believed to have originated from Chalil, Gua Musang, before being translocated to Gerik's forest area in a Perhilitan relocation operation but was presumed to have returned to its original habitat via the same route.
