Stroke treatment ‘delayed’ for Covid test, deceased PhD scholar’s parents win Rs 1 crore

In August 2020, a 30-year-old PhD scholar suffered a massive brain stroke in Hyderabad and died four days later, according to the Hyderabad District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission. The commission found that a private hospital and its neurologist were negligent and deficient in service, delaying necessary treatment while awaiting a Covid-19 RT-PCR report and a family consent for surgery.

The parents of the deceased, who claimed their son could have provided financial and emotional support, were awarded Rs 1 crore in compensation for loss of dependency, income, and future prospects, along with Rs 50,000 for legal expenses.
