Some missing tourists make contact as Nepal flood death toll tops 1,100

At least 1,118 people have died in Nepal following catastrophic floods that began on August 26, leaving over 3,900 others missing, according to officials. The death toll surpassed the initial estimate of 1,100 fatalities. As search efforts continue, some tourists previously reported missing have managed to make contact with authorities.

The Nepal Tourism Board reported that at least five foreign tourists, previously listed as missing, have contacted authorities via email or telephone. Australia's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese reported a positive update, stating that the number of Australians missing in the disaster had decreased from 43 to 38 after five individuals were confirmed safe overnight.

Albanese expressed hope for more positive news and emphasized the ongoing collaboration with authorities to locate the remaining missing tourists. Meanwhile, China completed a makeshift road to the disaster site at Gyirong Port, which was previously washed away by the floods, allowing heavy machinery to access the area for search and rescue operations.

China reported 16 deaths and 546 people missing as of Sunday. The glacial collapse at the Himalayas on August 26 triggered powerful floods that swept away homes, buildings, roads, and bridges in the affected areas.
