Shelton's awkward interview at US Open

On Wednesday at the US Open, top-ranked American Ben Shelton advanced to the third round after overcoming a challenging match against Polish player Hubert Hurkacz. The second-round contest, held at Arthur Ashe Stadium, lasted three hours and 24 minutes, with Shelton ultimately defeating Hurkacz 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (7), 7-5. Shelton explained that while he never trailed in set score, his opponent significantly shifted the momentum at one point during the second set.

The American player praised the level of play from his opponent, noting that Hurkacz hit "another gear" after Shelton took the first set. Throughout the match, both competitors utilized various shots and spins, including forehands, backhands, drop shots, overhead smashes, and overhead volleys. After winning the opening set, Shelton trailed in the following two sets before securing a tiebreaker victory in the third set, which ultimately led to his win.

The demanding match against Hurkacz proved beneficial for Shelton, as it tested his resilience and allowed him to grow stronger for future matches. Shelton's victory advances him to the third round of the US Open, the same stage he had to withdraw from in 2025 due to a shoulder injury.
