SACAA probes dramatic Cape Town Stadium flyover

The South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) is still working out its procedures before issuing a statement on the dramatic flyover of Cape Town Stadium before the second Test match between the Springboks and the All Blacks. On Saturday, two Airlink Embraer 190 passenger jets performed a flyby at an altitude of just 12 meters above the stadium's roof, prompting international criticism.

SACAA spokesperson Sisa Majola announced they are handling the matter and will release a media statement when all necessary processes have been completed. Airlink acknowledged the concerns raised on social media and online forums about the high-risk maneuver. The airline emphasized that the flight required meticulous planning and rehearsal, as it involved flying at low altitude and 150 knots.

Both aircraft were piloted by experienced crews, each consisting of three senior captains serving as commander, copilot, and safety/technical officer. The flight data confirms that the flyover complied with SACAA's approved safety altitude and speed limits. Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson, present at the stadium, dismissed the criticism, praising the pilots as the best in the world.

Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie applauded the feat, jokingly suggesting that the pilots should attempt to land on the field.
