Riot police break up protest against refugee shelter in Zeeland

Riot police intervened to disperse a crowd of approximately 300 protesters who staged a demonstration against plans to establish an emergency shelter for 150 asylum seekers in Tholen, Zeeland. The protesters gathered outside the town hall during a council meeting to discuss the proposed site, carrying banners. Police officers from the riot squad were deployed to "restore public order as quickly as possible" after some demonstrators were accused of inciting violence.

The council intends to house the refugees in a building on Postweg for up to two and a half years, in compliance with the "spreading law" (spreidingswet), which mandates all municipalities to share the responsibility of housing asylum seekers. Mayor Marleen Sijbers instructed councillors to remain inside the building until they received clearance from the police.
