Police deploy armoured vehicles, checkpoints after deadly New Winneba clashes

New Winneba, a town in Ghana's Central Region, experienced a period of unrest following an armed mob attack that resulted in three deaths and numerous injuries. The violence, which affected the town and nearby areas, appears to be connected to a land dispute between residents hailing from the Effutu and Gomoa regions. In response to the incident, police have made several arrests and increased security measures to deter further violence.

Some victims, including women and children, took refuge in churches for safety. Police spokesperson DCOP Ohene Bossman announced that the force has deployed additional personnel, including two armored vehicles from Accra, and four patrol cars to patrol the area. Furthermore, six evening checkpoints have been established to search vehicles for weapons or other potential threats.

The heightened security measures will persist throughout the day and night as authorities investigate the incident. Residents are advised to remain calm, avoid confrontations, and cooperate with law enforcement as they work to prevent retaliation and restore trust within the community.
