Pistol found in French lake may hold clue to murder mystery of British-Iraqi family

French investigators are scrutinizing a pistol uncovered by British tourists at a depth of two meters in Lake Annecy, in an effort to unravel one of France's most enduring cold cases – the 2012 murder of a British-Iraqi family. The Luger P06, believed to be the weapon that ended the lives of Saad Al Hilli, 50, his wife Iqbal, 47, and his mother-in-law Suhaila al-Allaf, 74, is the last glimmer of hope for cracking the cold case.

The cold-case investigative unit in Nanterre, west of Paris, expressed optimism about the pistol's potential significance to the ongoing investigation.

The family, known to have been staying at the Solitaire du Lac campsite prior to their deaths, met their tragic end when they were shot by a Luger P06. Judge Sabine Kheris, who has been handling the case for the past four years, has requested updates regarding any other incidents involving a Luger P06. The pistol found in the lake after a lengthy underwater period will undoubtedly pose a formidable challenge for the investigators.

Al Hilli family members expressed cautious enthusiasm, urging patience and caution in their pursuit of justice. The motive for the killings remains a mystery, with investigators exploring various possibilities, such as a personal vendetta or the involvement of the cyclist who worked at a classified nuclear site.
