Perak police launch investigations over toddler’s fatal fall at Victoria Bridge

IPOH, Sep 2 — Perak police have launched investigations into the fatal fall of a three-year-old boy from Victoria Bridge in Enggor yesterday, according to police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin. The child, Abdul Rafee Abdul Halim, is believed to have fallen approximately five metres while walking, after stepping into a gap in the bridge's structure. Several individuals have been summoned to assist in the investigation. Initial findings suggest no negligence on the part of the bridge.

Witnesses reported that the toddler fell around 6.30 pm while accompanied by his father. The incident occurred near Kuala Kangsar, in the state of Perak. Police chief Mohd Alwi stated that they are awaiting post-mortem results from Kuala Kangsar Hospital before determining further action.

In response to the tragedy, Sandrea Ng Shy Ching, chairperson of the State Housing and Local Government Committee, announced that the Kuala Kangsar Municipal Council (MPKK) had immediately restricted visitor access to the steel structure section of the bridge. This safety measure is expected to remain in place temporarily until worn and rotten track timbers are replaced, additional safety measures are installed, and the area is deemed safe to reopen.

MPKK has been monitoring the bridge periodically, with the latest inspection conducted on June 30, 2026.

MPKK is seeking about RM50,000 in immediate funds to install safety netting beneath the bridge while awaiting approval for other repair works. The overall safety of the site will also be reviewed in consultation with relevant parties to determine appropriate improvement measures.

The victim, Abdul Rafee Abdul Halim, reportedly fell through a gap in the bridge while walking with his father, ultimately succumbing to his injuries. The Victoria Bridge, over a century old, is a historic railway bridge in Enggor.
