Parnell emerging as top contender for Army secretary

Sean Parnell, the Pentagon’s chief spokesman, is emerging as a leading candidate for the Army secretary position, according to multiple Trump administration sources and people familiar with the matter. Parnell, who has held his current role since the start of President Donald Trump’s second term, is close to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and is seen as someone who understands the inner workings of the Army.

This has made him an attractive choice for the White House, as they seek stability after a series of leadership changes under Hegseth.

However, Parnell has not yet received a formal nomination, and President Trump has not yet announced the person who will succeed Dan Driscoll, who resigned earlier this week. Florida GOP Rep. Brian Mast, who chairs the House Foreign Affairs Committee, is another name being floated for the role. Mast, who recently met with Hegseth, suggested that it was a standard meeting, but sources indicated it related to the Army secretary position.

Mast's nomination could face challenges due to past domestic abuse allegations and skepticism from a faction of the president’s base regarding his support for the Israeli government. This could potentially "fracture the base," according to an administration official. The White House has stated that they cannot comment on speculation regarding the nomination process.
