Pakistan 'hopeful' despite US-Iran escalation, will continue to strive for dialogue and diplomacy: FO

Pakistan Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi expressed optimism about the country's prospects despite recent tensions between the United States and Iran. He stated that Pakistan remains committed to dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the ongoing conflict. Pakistan has played a crucial role in mediating peace efforts, signing the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding as a mediator and facilitating a ceasefire between the US and Iran in April.

However, sporadic attacks around the Strait of Hormuz have hindered the pursuit of a final peace agreement. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif recently met with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to discuss the regional situation, emphasizing Pakistan's commitment to peace through restraint, dialogue, and diplomacy. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit.

Pakistani military leaders have also visited Iran to advocate for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial trade route. The Permanent Court of Arbitration recently ruled that India must uphold the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan and suspend work on a hydroelectric project in occupied Kashmir, validating Pakistan's stance that disputes over the treaty should be resolved within its framework.
