Ottawa commits millions to shield Nova Scotia companies from U.S. tariff pain

The Canadian federal government has allocated $14.1 million to assist Nova Scotia businesses in coping with the impact of U.S. tariffs. Justice Minister Sean Fraser, who also presides over the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, unveiled the funding package at Ace Machining Ltd., a recipient of over $400,000 for purchasing an automated computer numerical control milling station.

Fraser explained that this investment will enhance the company's productivity and competitiveness in the marketplace. The funds are sourced from Ottawa's $1.5-billion Regional Tariff Response Initiative, which is part of a broader $7.5-billion package aimed at supporting companies affected by U.S. trade policy. Notably, the U.S. recently imposed tariffs of 50% on approximately $28 billion worth of Canadian goods, with reciprocal tariffs on American products set to take effect the following week.

Fraser stated, "These are among the first investments we're delivering, with more to come across Atlantic Canada."
