Ontario threatened to cut off U.S. critical minerals supply. Sudbury isn’t panicking

Sudbury, Ontario, the province's mining capital, remains undeterred by threats from U.S. President Donald Trump to cut off the flow of critical minerals in response to trade tariffs. Mayor Paul Lefebvre stated that the city's nickel and copper exports, not subject to tariffs, are not affected by the conflict. Ontario, as the largest producer of nickel in Canada, contributes significantly to the global supply.

The U.S. has one operational nickel mine and relies on Sudbury for processing. Despite the tariffs, the city is not in talks with American officials, and the mayor declined a conference invitation due to the trade war. Ontario Premier Doug Ford has not yet referenced his threat to cut off critical minerals to the U.S. but emphasized the importance of high-class nickel to both Canada and the U.S. Despite the political climate, Chamber of Commerce president Marie Litalien noted that Sudbury continues to operate as usual, indicating resilience in the face of economic challenges.
