Ogun Issues Fresh Flood Alert, Urges Residents in Vulnerable Areas to Relocate

The Ogun State Government has released a new flood alert warning ahead of the second phase of the 2026 rainy season. The authorities are urging residents in vulnerable regions to stay alert and consider relocating to safer areas if necessary. This notice comes after the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) predicted heavy rainfall for Ogun during the upcoming rainy season.

In a statement, the state's Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Ola Oresanya, highlighted that the first rainy season phase, from mid-March to July, caused intense rainfall and isolated flash floods, but the impact was relatively low due to the government's proactive actions. These measures included public awareness, regular maintenance of waterways, and enhanced waste management.

The second phase is expected to begin in September, with an average rainfall of about 360mm, according to NiMet's forecast. Oresanya warned that heavy rains could lead to river and coastal flooding, as well as oversaturation of wetlands and floodplains. He advised residents in areas such as Isheri, Arepo, Mawere, Magboro, Akute, Warewa, and coastal communities like Makun-Omi, Iwopin, Oni, Ifaara, and Igele to take the necessary precautions.

Fish farmers operating in floodplains and river corridors were specifically urged to harvest their stocks promptly to prevent potential losses. The government called on various organizations and stakeholders to intensify flood-response efforts, monitor vulnerable locations, and ensure drainage channels remain clear. The state government remains committed to minimizing the adverse effects of flooding and appreciates residents' cooperation in the measures taken during the first phase of the rainy season.
