Niger: Borgu residents flee homes, question security strategies as attacks persist

Communities in Borgu, Niger State, have suffered greatly due to repeated attacks by armed men, according to residents. The latest incident involved the abduction of Muslim worshippers during Jumu'at prayers on August 21, 2026. The attack forced villagers to abandon their homes and farms, and some have even crossed into the neighboring Benin Republic.

Prince Murtala Haliru Dantoro, son of the late Emir of Borgu, suggested that up to 500 people could have been abducted, though the figure has not been confirmed. The police are working with community members and local vigilantes to determine the exact number, but the difficult terrain and widespread impact make the task challenging.

The uncertainty surrounding the abductees has left families in distress, unable to contact their relatives due to destroyed telecommunications infrastructure. The attacks have created fear and mistrust within the communities, and residents are questioning the effectiveness of security measures. Some have even fled to neighboring countries, leaving their homes, farms, and livelihoods behind.

The killing of Galla village head, Alhaji Ahmed Yusuf, has further heightened tensions and increased suspicion within the community.
