Mumbai’s 27-Km Inner Ring Road Around Nariman Point To Create New Traffic Corridor

Mumbai's ambitious plan to construct a 27-km inner ring-road around Nariman Point is underway, following the completion of several critical infrastructure projects. This will create a new traffic corridor to alleviate congestion in the city's eastern and western regions. The smallest of five planned rings, the Nariman Point loop will connect Nariman Point via the Mumbai Coastal Road Project, the Sewri-Worli Elevated Connector, the Eastern Freeway, and the Orange Gate-Marine Drive connection, before returning to its origin.

While the Coastal Road and Eastern Freeway are already in operation, the remaining links are under construction. Once completed, this ring will serve as a vital alternative route for motorists, reducing their reliance on congested central stretches. The project is part of a broader plan to develop a series of increasingly larger rings across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, with each ring connecting more infrastructure such as the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, Western Express Highway, and others.

The ultimate goal is to provide motorists with multiple travel options between different parts of the city, including Thane, Mira-Bhayandar, and rapidly developing areas across the harbor. The ring-road strategy, initially proposed by Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, aims to change the geometry of Mumbai's road network, enabling orbital movement and bypassing congested central areas.

Each completed link not only provides direct connectivity but also contributes to a more seamless network for longer journeys across the metropolitan region.
