Microsoft will stop finishing your sentences in Word and Outlook

Microsoft has disabled text predictions by default in Word and Outlook across its platforms, after recognizing that unwanted suggestions can occasionally disrupt the user experience. The change applies to Word for Windows, the web, iOS, and Android, as well as classic Outlook for Windows and Outlook for Mac. The feature remains accessible, though it will no longer start automatically.

Introduced years ago, the feature functions similarly to Microsoft peering over users' shoulders, offering suggestions for what they might type next. The annoyance stems from the default on setting, as it was not always welcomed by all users. Microsoft explains that text predictions aim to enhance document and email creation efficiency by suggesting words and phrases during typing.

While some find these suggestions beneficial, others would prefer to write without them. This update grants users greater control over their editing experience, allowing them to tailor their workflow according to their preferences. The update guarantees that predictive text remains an option for users who find it helpful, while simultaneously minimizing unwelcome interruptions for those who prefer to write without suggestions appearing automatically.

Microsoft did not clarify whether the change will deactivate text predictions for users who have previously enabled them or if it will only affect new installations and profiles. Users who desire the suggestions can still activate them through the applications' settings. Although Microsoft is not the sole company to propose text suggestions as users type, it stands out for its decision to make the feature opt-in instead of opt-out.

This minor alteration might indicate that Microsoft is heeding the calls from customers who would rather decide themselves whether AI should be incorporated into their workflow.
