Melanesian countries to review Indonesia's status at MSG if no action on West Papua visit

Melanesian countries are urging Indonesia to allow a visit by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights to West Papua in order to address ongoing human rights violations in the region. The Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) has stated that if Indonesia fails to facilitate the visit before their 2027 summit, its associate member status within the group will be reviewed.

The MSG, which includes Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and New Caledonia's FLNKS Kanak Movement, as well as the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP) as an observer, has requested that the current MSG chair, Fiji, write to Indonesia to enable the visit. Leaders of the Melanesian countries have also affirmed that they will consider reviewing Indonesia's associate member status at the 2027 MSG summit if the visit and report are not produced.

In addition, they are exploring the possibility of a meeting between MSG leaders and Indonesia's President Prabowo Subianto during the UN General Assembly in New York. The escalation of the conflict in West Papua under Prabowo's leadership has resulted in the displacement of communities, raising concerns about the situation's potential impact on the MSG's review of Indonesia's association.
