Media owners demand swift probe after Standard editor Alex Kiprotich’s abduction

The Media Owners Association of Kenya (MOA) has demanded a thorough investigation into the alleged abduction of Standard Group Associate Editor Alex Kiprotich, according to a statement released on September 2, 2026. MOA Chairperson Agnes Kalekye expressed relief that Kiprotich had been found safe after the incident on September 1, 2026.

Kalekye emphasized that journalists' safety is paramount and should never be compromised while performing their duties. The association urged relevant authorities to ascertain the details of Kiprotich’s disappearance and hold accountable any individuals responsible for the alleged abduction. MOA also called for clear institutional guarantees to ensure the protection of all media practitioners in Kenya, stating their willingness to engage with government bodies, security agencies, and industry partners in a structured dialogue aimed at enhancing journalist safety.

The incident has raised concerns within the media community, prompting calls for authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding Kiprotich’s abduction and safeguard journalists fulfilling their constitutional duty to inform the public. Kiprotich and his driver were reportedly abandoned in a thicket in Machakos County.
