Macron, King Charles hail UK-France ties after viewing Bayeux Tapestry

King Charles III and French President Emmanuel Macron expressed admiration for the United Kingdom and France's strong ties during a preview of the Bayeux Tapestry exhibition at the British Museum in London on Wednesday. The leaders joined British Prime Minister Andrew Burnham, along with their respective spouses, for a celebratory event marking the historic tapestry showcase.

The Bayeux Tapestry, depicting the 1066 Norman conquest of England, has been on display at the British Museum until next July, thanks to a loan championed by Macron. Macron expressed hope that future generations would remember the tale of the two nations forging a bond as close as the threads of this ancient embroidery. King Charles emphasized the tapestry's value as a symbol of trust between the nations during a time when trust seems scarce among them.

The joint action between Macron, Charles, and their spouses, along with Burnham and his wife, marked the start of Macron's two-day visit to the UK. The French leader highlighted the significance of the visit as he nears the end of his presidential term and aims to advance European sovereignty independent of the United States. Burnham welcomed the visit and stressed the importance of strengthening post-Brexit cooperation with the EU, which he sees as crucial for UK growth.

Macron also acknowledged the value of joint actions, such as the coalition supporting Ukraine, with Burnham. Anand Menon, a political professor at King's College London, cautioned that while a strong friendship is valuable, practical progress on EU negotiations remains necessary.
