Leatherback turtles return to Terengganu after nine years

Leatherback turtles, a species currently under threat, have returned to the waters off Terengganu after a nine-year hiatus. The Terengganu Fisheries Department reported this significant development yesterday, stating that tracks measuring 2.1 meters wide and a nest containing turtle eggs approximately 52mm in size were discovered along the Pantai Marang shoreline. Of the 44 eggs found, all have been safely relocated to a hatchery at Rantau Abang, where they are expected to hatch within seven to nine weeks.

This re-emergence of the leatherback turtle signals a promising milestone in conservation efforts. It has been nine years since the last sighting of these turtles on Terengganu's coastline, which occurred in 2017. The discovery brings hope that future generations will have the opportunity to observe this ancient species in its natural habitat.

The rediscovery also confirms that the Terengganu coast remains a secure and favored nesting ground for these magnificent creatures, according to Pang Nyukang, director of the Terengganu Fisheries Department.

Pang Nyukang emphasized the importance of public cooperation in maintaining the cleanliness of the beach and sea to safeguard the survival of this highly prized species. He urged everyone to join hands in protecting and preserving nature's treasures, praying that all the turtle eggs successfully hatch and that the hatchlings can make a safe journey back to the ocean.
