Kwame Pianim holds up Fidelity Bank as a model of sound governance and Ghanaian leadership

Veteran economist and investment expert Mr Kwame Pianim has hailed Fidelity Bank Ghana as a shining example of sound governance, credible succession, and homegrown ownership. Pianim made these remarks during a panel discussion on the macro-environment at the bank's Debt Capital Markets Conference in Accra.

Pianim commended the bank for convening this timely and necessary conversation, stating that the numbers presented were impressive. With over five decades of experience witnessing Ghana's economic cycles, Pianim emphasized the need for fiscal discipline and strong institutions to maintain the country's stability. He cautioned against complacency and urged for better succession planning, citing Fidelity Bank's transition from the founders to a new generation as a prime example.

Pianim argued that honesty, good management, and a solid succession plan are crucial for any issuer considering the capital market. He pointed out that Fidelity Bank's orderly leadership transition was a testament to the kind of institutional maturity that investors need to have confidence in a business and ensure it can fulfill its obligations over the long term.

The economist further stressed the importance of Ghanaian ownership in the financial sector to build a financial system that serves the nation's priorities. He urged the strengthening of domestic sources of capital, such as pension funds, insurance pools, and Ghanaian institutions, to ensure the country is dancing to its own tune rather than following others'.
