Kremlin shows panic over Ukraine’s plan to close Russian airspace – Kovalenko

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky cautioned on Tuesday that Russian airspace is becoming "completely unsafe" for aviation, due to the overwhelming presence of Ukrainian drones. This warning came after Russia's leader, Vladimir Putin, dismissed Zelensky's statements as "state terrorism". The escalating tensions are attributed to the intense long-range attacks on both sides and delayed diplomatic efforts led by the United States.

Zelensky's nightly address to the nation expressed concern over the safety of civil aviation in Russia's airspace, stating that Ukraine is not threatening civilian aircraft. Ukrainian drones have been disrupting air traffic at Russian airports, and the number of these drones has surged in recent months. Russian leader Putin retaliated by branding Zelensky's remarks as "state terrorism" and called for negotiations, asserting that they are not conducive to dialogue with terrorists.

The escalating conflict has resulted in casualties, with at least 12 people killed in Kyiv and surrounding areas by Russian missile and drone strikes. Zelensky warned that the safe days in Russian skies are over and asked partners to take note of the risks. Russia has countered with heightened use of ballistic missiles, but Ukraine has retaliated by targeting Russian infrastructure.

Zelensky also mentioned that Ukraine would cease drone operations in Russian airspace if requested for negotiations. Despite ongoing challenges, such as a shortage of ammunition for air defense systems, Russia has claimed progress on the battlefield. Russian President Putin acknowledged the impact of Ukrainian strikes on Russian civilian facilities, including refineries, but emphasized the need for protection.

Zelensky emphasized his willingness to cooperate during specific periods in targeted destinations, but diplomatic efforts mediated by the US have stalled since the conflict's inception. Aviation risk advisory firm Osprey Flight Solutions warned of the mounting operational risks, predicting that Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory may continue to increase in the short term, with the possibility of miscalculation and misidentification.
