Karua, ODM condemn abduction of Standard Group editor Alex Kiprotich

The abduction of Standard Group Associate Editor Alex Kiprotich has sparked condemnation from political leaders and top political parties. The incident occurred when armed men intercepted Kiprotich along the Gilgil–Nakuru Road on Tuesday night before finding him near Masinga Dam the following morning. Martha Karua, leader of the People’s Liberation Party, expressed deep concern over the incident, warning that such acts should not go unpunished as they only perpetuate fear and intimidation.

She reminded the nation of its history of similar methods during the Moi era, stating that Kenya fought for democracy to escape that form of governance. The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) similarly condemned the abduction, stressing that it can lead the nation into anarchy. They also emphasized their commitment to championing human rights and demanded a thorough investigation into the matter.

Kiharu Member of Parliament Ndindi Nyoro described the abduction as "crude, diabolical, and heinous," emphasizing that press freedom must be protected, and the state must refrain from intimidating journalists. Standard Group CEO Chaacha Mwita recounted receiving a distress call from a colleague around 9:20 p.m., informing him of Kiprotich's abduction, which led to a swift response from security teams, police stations, and the company's platforms.

Kiprotich was found at around 6:30 a.m. near Masinga Dam, having been dropped off with his phone switched off. The incident has reignited discussions about the safety of journalists in Kenya, with media and human rights organizations advocating for accountability and an end to impunity.
