Ibom Air refutes Uyo airport monopoly allegation

Ibom Air has denied claims it operates a monopoly at Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo, or prevents other airlines from operating there. The airline clarified that it has no authority or regulatory power to decide which carriers can fly from Uyo or any other Nigerian airport. The statement, made amid public debate on the carrier's dominant presence, cites Section 8(3) of the Civil Aviation Act 2022, which empowers the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority to regulate civil aviation.

Ibom Air stated that it only adjusts its own operations and not competitors' and that factors like aircraft availability and regulatory requirements can affect flight frequency. The airline welcomed increased competition, citing potential benefits such as more travel options, competitive pricing, and improved connectivity. However, industry expert Samuel Caulcrik acknowledged that a strong presence could be perceived as anti-competitive, even without a formal legal monopoly.
