The Deutsche Zentralinstitut für soziale Fragen (DZI) has compiled a list of organizations active in the disaster zone or working with local partners to provide aid. All of these organizations have been awarded the DZI donation seal, a sign of their special eligibility for funding. This list, available on the DZI website, includes the names of the organizations, their addresses, and bank details.

The DZI advises that competence should be the primary factor when selecting an organization. Before donating, ensure the organization has the necessary expertise to help effectively and efficiently on the ground. They should have good relationships with local authorities and other aid organizations in the disaster zone. Preferably, donate money rather than goods, as money can be used flexibly and efficiently, especially when donations are not specifically earmarked.

Only donate goods if reputable organizations specifically request them or if it's a personal request from those you know well, and if the safe transport of the items to the location is guaranteed. Don't fall for "treadmill" organizations that emerge during major catastrophes and try to attract public attention. Lack of competence can lead to a large portion of donations being lost in administration or being misused for personal enrichment.

Therefore, thoroughly check the organization, for example using the DZI check list for safe donations. Be especially cautious with donation calls on social media, as the DZI points out there are currently no secure mechanisms for selecting published donation accounts. It's even more important to verify the information before following donation calls from private individuals or companies on the internet.

Additionally, donations can be tax-deductible. They benefit not only the affected people but can also reduce your tax burden. To claim a deduction, include the donations made to a tax-exempt organization in the Special Expenses section of your tax return. Donations up to 20 percent of total income are deductible, and if the donation is 300 euros or less, a bank statement or online payment receipt is sufficient as proof.

In cases of donations to organizations during disasters, there are sometimes exceptions, and tax authorities are less strict.
