Hey Siri, what’s that big lake in Canada called now? After Google, Apple bows to Trump’s ‘Lake America’ decree

After Google Maps began to show Lake Ontario as "Lake America" for US users, in compliance with an executive order by US President Donald Trump, Apple followed suit. The two tech giants have now renamed the large lake in Canada as "Lake America" for their US users, while Canadian users and those in other parts of the world continue to see the traditional name, "Lake Ontario".

This renaming follows a similar move by Apple in January, when the Gulf of Mexico was renamed the "Gulf of America" by Trump. Apple's compliance with the presidential decree illustrates how the tech industry is being affected by geopolitical disputes, as the White House attempts to influence companies to align with directives that have been dismissed by international partners.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and New York Governor Kathy Hochul have both explicitly refused to endorse the renaming, which has been in use for over four centuries. Over half of the lake's surface area is located in Canada, with the rest situated in New York state. It is important to note that Trump's order only legally applies to US federal usage, and recent polls indicate that a majority of Americans do not support the renaming.
