Heads or tails? $1 coin with Trump's face and gold finish to go on sale

A $1 coin featuring the face of former US President Donald Trump and the Great Seal of the United States is set to go on sale this Wednesday, according to the US Mint. The coin's design, approved by the US Commission of Fine Arts, includes Trump's visage on the "heads" side and the Great Seal on the "tails" side. Trump, who appointed the commission members, described the idea as "very unusual" but "honoured."

The coins, which can be used as legal tender, drew criticism due to federal law prohibiting the depiction of a living president on US currency. Despite this, the treasury secretary holds the authority to authorize the minting and issuance of special coins in certain circumstances. The coins were struck to commemorate 250 years of American heritage, with "LIBERTY" above Trump's face and "1776 (~) 2026" below.

The Great Seal of the United States appears on the reverse side, with an eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch. Each roll of 25 coins costs $61, while a bag of 100 coins is priced at $154.50. Additionally, some special-issue coins were randomly hidden among the rolls and bags, marked "July 4th" due to their minting date. Households are limited to two orders, though this restriction will be lifted at 2pm Eastern time on Thursday. The US Mint emphasizes that these coins honor America's 250th birthday.
