Heads or tails? $1 coin with Trump’s face and gold finish to go on sale

The U.S. Mint has commenced production of a new $1 coin, featuring the image of President Donald Trump on one side and the Great Seal of the United States on the other. This coin, designed to commemorate America's 250th birthday, will be available for purchase starting Wednesday. The coin's design was approved this year by the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, which includes members appointed by Trump.

Trump has previously expressed mixed views about this idea, describing it as "very unusual" but also "honored by it." His tenure has seen several initiatives aiming to have his name or image associated with prominent sites, which have faced legal challenges. These include attempts to place Trump's name on the Kennedy Center and the U.S. Institute for Peace.

The coins, which can be used as legal tender, have sparked some controversy due to federal law prohibiting the depiction of a living president on U.S. currency. However, the Treasury Secretary has the authority to authorize the minting and issuance of special coins in certain circumstances. The coins were struck to celebrate 250 years of American heritage, with "LIBERTY" above Trump's face and "1776 (tilde) 2026" below.

The reverse side showcases the Great Seal of the United States, along with a banner bearing the phrase "E PLURIBUS UNUM," which translates to "out of many, one."

Each roll of 25 coins will cost $61, while a bag of 100 coins will be priced at $154.50. The U.S. Mint has also included some special-issue coins among the rolls and bags, marked with "July 4th," as they were struck on this day, the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Households are allowed to place only two orders, but this limit will be lifted at 2 p.m. Eastern time on Thursday.
